The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reacted to comments by prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Jingir, over the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Jingir had recently defended the idea of a Muslim-Muslim ticket, saying Christians in Nigeria should not oppose it.

His remarks have generated reactions across the country, with concerns raised over the possible impact of religious politics on national unity.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Rev. Joseph Hayab, said Christians have the right to express their concerns about political developments that affect the country.

Hayab stressed the importance of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, noting that Nigeria belongs to citizens of different religious backgrounds.

He also urged political leaders and religious figures to avoid statements capable of deepening religious divisions or creating tension among Nigerians.

The CAN chairman’s reaction comes amid growing political discussions over the 2027 presidential election and whether political parties should maintain or reject the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

The debate has remained one of the most sensitive political issues in Nigeria, particularly since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima emerged on the same-faith ticket in the 2023 presidential election.
