Almost 12 years after it last effected a price hike, Nigeria’s telecoms sector, yesterday, began the implementation of a new tariff. Subscribers, especially on the MTN network, woke up Tuesday to see that the prices of its data subscriptions and SMS have gone up. The tariff hike came a bit earlier, as the telecoms operators had planned to effect the change from March after they had secured the final nod from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has raised concerns over the disappearance of 3,907 rifles and pistols from various police formations in the country in 2020. The committee also revisited the case of reported missing 178,459 firearms, including 88,078 AK-47 rifles from police inventory. The concerns were raised on Tuesday when the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, appeared before the committee to respond to audit queries flagged in the 2019 Auditor-General Report. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has directed workers to boycott services of telecommunications giants: MTN, Airtel and Glo over the 50 percent tariff hikes. The Central Working Committee of the labour union, made the announcement on Wednesday in a statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, and secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a warning to banks against imposing ATM withdrawal limits below N20,000. According to the CBN, customers with sufficient funds should be able to withdraw up to N20,000 per transaction from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). The CBN emphasised that any bank that compels a customer to withdraw less than N20,000 per transaction, despite having sufficient funds, will be contravening the regulation and will be sanctioned.
