–As Savannah Energy cuts gas supply to Ibom Power Plant

— Staff of State-owned Power Company embark on strike

–NERC report reveals Ibom Power Plant generates zero megawatt of electricity since August

By our Correspondent

There seems to be no solution at the horizon for the problem of electricity in Akwa Ibom State State with the recent crisis rocking the energy sector in the State.

The Guide Newspaper findings during the week revealed that Ibom Power Company, the energy company managing Ibom Power Plant in the State has been shutdown since July, 2025, following series of unresolved issues bothering on staff welfare, non supply of gas to Ibom Power Plant by Savannah Energy due to failure of Akwa Ibom State government to defray past accumulated debts incurred by the company and vandalisation of electrical equipment from the power plant.

Further findings by the Guide Newspaper revealed that staff of Ibom Power Company have being on strike since July 2025, over non payment of salary by the management of the company. Our source who took our correspondent around Ibom power plant and Savannah Energy Gas plant recently disclosed that Ibom Power Plant has failed to contribute any megawatt of electricity to the national grid since August as the power plant was not generating electricity due to non supply of gas by Savannah Energy to power the plant which is a gas-fired power plant with a battery energy storage system (BESS).

Our source from Ibom power Company who only spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak for the company, confided in the Guide Newspaper because he was not authorised to speak for the company revealed that Savannah Energy had cut off gas supply from Ibom Power plant due to the failure of Ibom Power Company to keep to the terms of engagement with Savannah Energy.

It would would be recalled that Governor Umo Eno in November, 2024, one year ago, sacked the the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Power Company, Engr. Meyen Etukudo from the company shortly after Engr. Meyen Etukudo had disclosed in a press release that the persistent blackout experienced in the state was due to the refusal of Savannah Energy to supply Gas to Ibom Power plant claiming underpayment from Ibom Power.

Meanwhile an official report retrieved by the Guide Newspaper from the official website of National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC further confirmed that Ibom Power Plant contributed zero megawatt of electricity to the national grid in August 2025. This was contained in the NERC fact sheets showing the operational performance of power plants across the country in 2025.

It would be recalled that on September 20, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pst. Umo Bassey Eno, declared the Akwa Ibom Electricity Summit 2025 open in Akwa Ibom State,, describing the submit as a major turning point in the State’s quest for energy security and unlimited access to power.

However, the Guide Newspaper reports that after the submit, Akwa Ibom people are yet to witness any remarkable improvement in electricity supply in the State.
