
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Senator Aniekan Bassey, on Monday received members of the Africa Diaspora Corporation (ADC) and the Sani Bello Foundation (SBF) during a courtesy visit at his office in the National Assembly, Abuja.
The visits, led by ADC’s Country Director, Hon. Chike Amadichi, and SBF’s Project Coordinator and Liaison Officer, Engr. Umanah Jonah, were to congratulate Senator Bassey on his appointment as Chairman of the Committee and to propose productive diaspora synergies.
The delegation also affirmed their commitment to working collaboratively with the National Assembly to improve the welfare and engagement of Nigerians in the diaspora and those benefiting from NGO-led initiatives.
In his response, Senator Bassey, who represents the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, welcomed the delegations with deep appreciation.
He described the visit as “an inspiration to keep working harder for the greater good of Nigerians globally” and emphasized that the Committee under his leadership is fully committed to pushing legislation that will strengthen the operations of NGOs and diaspora institutions.
“We will continue to create a legal framework that enables organizations like yours to operate efficiently and effectively. The Nigerian diaspora is a cardinal part of our national development, and NGOs are key drivers of social impact. This Committee stands ready to support your noble efforts,” Senator Bassey assured.
Senator Bassey, known for his passionate advocacy for youth empowerment, education, and grassroots development, also stressed the importance of collaboration between government bodies and private institutions in tackling national challenges and uplifting communities.
The representatives of ADC and SBF, in their respective remarks, thanked Senator Bassey for his warm reception and for exuding an aura of “hope for constructive engagement between Nigeria and its diaspora, as well as a bridge of transformation in the NGO space.”
They expressed optimism that their visits will yield a productive partnership that will empower more Nigerians through impactful projects, legislative backing, and strategic initiatives.
Other members of the ADC included Hon. Bruno Obim, Country Director (Switzerland). and Barr. Marvel Jime, Consultant to ADC.
