Today, April 5, 2025, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, returns to Oron Federal Constituency for the exciting Arise Town-Square and Empowerment Series. Let’s take a moment to look back at his impactful visit on March 12, 2025, when he launched the game-changing Oron Maritime Infrastructure Development Works,

By James Edet

Nestled on the bank of the scenic Oron River, an offshoot of the Atlantic Ocean, Oron town is characterised by beautiful beaches and the enticing aroma of rich seafood, providing a perfect backdrop for the transformative vision of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno for eco-friendly tourism and the blue economy in Akwa Ibom State.

I fondly remember childhood trips on ferries like the MV Obudu and MV Helen, whisking us away from the enchanting shores of Oron to Calabar. The air was filled with the delightful scents of local delicacies, accompanied by laughter, music, and other forms of entertainment that created joyful memories. Once a bustling hub of commerce and tourism, Oron had sadly diminished over the decades, becoming a shadow of its former glory before Governor Eno’s visionary intervention!

Fortunately, in a momentous stride towards reclaiming the splendour of this coastal gem, the recent unveiling of the Maritime Infrastructure Development Works by His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, symbolises not just the construction of physical structures but the birth of an imaginative vision aimed at elevating Oron as a national maritime hub, a tourism attraction and a beacon of blue economy endeavours for the sub-region. As part of his ARISE Agenda blueprint, Governor Eno is not merely investing in infrastructure; he is sowing the seeds of economic growth and tourism revival in the heart of Akwa Ibom State.

At the project launch, Governor Eno proclaimed:
“We are here to reignite the renewal and the renaissance of Oron…, the tourism spot and the maritime hub of our state; we can say emphatically that with the launching of the maritime infrastructure, Oron is back!”

This declaration encapsulates the ambitious initiatives set forth to breathe new life into Oron’s economic landscape.

The initiative encompasses the construction of a state-of-the-art terminal building, complemented by new cargo and ferry jetties that stretch towards the river’s embrace. These developments include meticulously designed storage facilities featuring warehousing, dry storage, and refrigerated cold rooms powered by sustainable solar energy. The potential for economic growth is immense, cultivating an environment ripe for investment, trade, and job creation, while ensuring Oron’s famous seafood is delivered fresh for locals and tourists alike.

In addition to enhancing maritime connectivity, this investment fortifies the town’s coastal integrity through shoreline protection facilities designed to safeguard the area’s natural beauty. A modern motor park with ample car and lorry parking will streamline passenger and cargo movement, knitting together the land-sea transportation nexus that supports the region’s logistical framework.

Addressing the audience, Governor Eno emphasised his commitment to the project’s timely completion, stating:
“You can be rest assured that we will fulfil our part of the bargain with the contractor. We look forward to coming here between August and September, because we want to wait for the ferry to arrive so we can commission everything on the same day. I’d like to take that ferry to Calabar and return on that day.”

This assurance speaks to the confidence with which the administration approaches this ambitious project.

Governor Eno’s commitment to sustainability of this ambitious project extends beyond infrastructure; the creation of a Marine Joint Task Force Outpost ensures that public safety remains a hallmark of this transformation. Equipped with solar-powered lighting, it enhances security while elevating the aesthetic appeal of the maritime zone, making it an inviting space for both locals and visitors.

In a significant show of appreciation and solidarity, stakeholders across Oron Nation, including political leaders, Oron Union, Oron Think Tank, the business class, traditional and religious fathers, as well as women and youth groups from across the five Local Government Areas of Oron Federal Constituency, unanimously commended Governor Eno for his efforts in restoring the Oron town to its former glory. The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, widely celebrated as mother of Oron Nation, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, praised the Governor, describing him as “the best of Oron’s brother” who is determined to change the narrative of the area for the better. The Executive Chairman of Oron Local Government Area, Ulap Okon Enweme, along with the Delivery Advisor on the project and the immediate past Commissioner for Transport, Mr Oman Essin, and the Clan Head of Idua, Chief Asukwo, among others, also spoke glowingly of Governor Eno’s towering leadership.

Their collective sentiments culminated in a heartfelt vote of confidence for the Governor’s superlative performance thus far, affirming the unanimous support of the Oron Nation for Governor Umo Eno’s first and second terms in office. This motion was affirmatively moved by Hon Martin Esin, the Member representing Oron Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, and seconded by Hon Kenim Onofiok, the Member representing Oron State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

In all these, the aspirations of Governor Eno extend beyond economic metrics, capturing the essence of Oron as a vibrant destination and a major tourism gateway to Akwa Ibom State and the South-South region. With recreational facilities such as a floating bar and charming beachfront huts, the project invites travellers to explore the tranquil beauty of this coastal paradise, enriching their experiences with the rich culture and hospitality that Oron has to offer.

As the maritime hub of Akwa Ibom State takes shape, the significance of these infrastructural advancements cannot be overstated. Oron stands on the brink of an economic renaissance, rooted in the celebration of local culture and the preservation of its natural wonders. This vision, championed by Governor Umo Eno, promises a future where Oron evolves into a dynamic destination, brimming with opportunity and resilience.

As we celebrate this pivotal moment in Oron’s history, we are reminded that it is the tireless efforts of leaders like Governor Umo Eno that breathe life into a people’s dreams. This initiative serves as a rallying call for collective stewardship of our precious environment and resources, inviting all to join in the promise of a brighter, more prosperous Oron—an enchanting jewel in the grand framework of Nigeria’s maritime ambitions, while giving Governor Umo Eno a generous supporting system and goodwill to continue with his developmental strides in Akwa Ibom State.
