How World’s darkest model Made $9m fortune

An Ethiopian-born American model of South Sudanese descent, Nyakim Gatwech made a total estimate of $9 million fortune for embracing her dark complexion as a badge of honour, transforming it into a symbol of beauty and empowerment.

Nyakim Gatwech, who will turn 32 on January 27, 2025, has become a global phenomenon, using her journey to challenge conventional beauty standards and inspire millions around the world.

Reports from ‘South Sudan News Now’ indicate that she now has an estimated net worth of $9 million, built through lucrative endorsements and a strong social media presence of nearly one million followers.
Born in Gambela, Ethiopia, Nyakim’s story began when her family fled the Second Sudanese Civil War. They endured years of hardship as refugees before settling in the United States when she was 14. Adjusting to life in Buffalo, New York, came with challenges, including cultural shocks and societal prejudice against her dark skin tone.

Reflecting on her experiences, Nyakim shared, “When I was in middle school, I didn’t know how to cope with the negative comments I received daily.”

She added, “Sometimes in the morning, I remind myself, ‘Out this door, there are going to be negative people looking at you sideways… but it doesn’t matter because you are beautiful inside and out.’”

Her confidence remained unshaken, even when faced with incidents like an Uber driver asking if she would bleach her skin for $10,000. Laughing off the suggestion, she reportedly said, “You won’t believe the kind of questions I get and the kind of looks I get for having this skin,” she told ‘Bored Panda’.

Nyakim’s modelling career began in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after participating in a university fashion show. Her striking features and self-assured presence caught the attention of global brands such as Calvin Klein, Fashion Nova, and L’Oréal.

In an interview with ‘Warpaint International’, Nyakim stressed the importance of self-acceptance: “I look in the mirror every day and remind myself that I am beautiful, I am different, I am strong, and I am confident.”

Her message has resonated globally, inspiring young people to embrace their unique identities and challenge societal norms.

Beyond modelling, Nyakim is expanding her influence by venturing into entrepreneurship, with plans to launch a skincare line tailored for darker skin tones.
