A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 27 for ruling in the case filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Senate for allegedly citing her for misconduct without fair hearing.
Justice Binta Nyako on Tuesday slated the case for ruling after listening to lawyers in the matter.
She assured that she would rule on the preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter brought by Akpabio through his counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN).
The judge said she will determine the issue of contempt of court against Akpabio and the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions for proceeding to hear and suspend Akpoti-Uduaghan despite the pendency of the suit.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is the senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, had filed the suit after she was accused of flouting Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 when she rejected the change of her seat in the chambers on February 20.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s counsel, Michael Numa (SAN) had asked the court to declare any action taken during the pendency of her suit as, “Null, void, and of no effect.”
The matter was reassigned to Justice Nyako after Justice Obiora Egwatu recused himself from the case.
