Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a suspected cultist, Ubong Friday Benson, 24, for allegedly attempting to kill his father.

A statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, revealed that the suspect was apprehended following a distress call from his father (name withheld) a resident of Ikot Imoh Village, in Abak who reported that his son had barricaded himself and was threatening to kill him with a dagger.

The complainant also revealed that the suspect had previously threatened to shoot him with a locally made pistol, which he regularly hid in a nearby bush.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, a police team was immediately mobilized to the scene, leading to the arrest of Benson. During interrogation, he confessed to owning the firearm and led officers to its location in the bush where it was recovered.

A search of the suspect’s belongings also yielded dangerous weapons, including a dagger, an iron filer, a long iron chisel, an iron hammer, and a penknife.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect had inflicted injuries on some community members prior to his arrest. However, as of this report, only the father has come forward with a formal statement,” the police said.

The Command assured that investigations are ongoing and pledged to ensure the swift prosecution of the suspect.
