A tenant has allegedly inflicted serious head injuries on his landlord during a confrontation over an increase in annual rent from ₦300,000 to ₦1 million in Benin City, Edo State.

The incident came to public attention on Friday, October 30, after a video shared online by Edo TV showed the tenant narrating how a disagreement over renovation work and rent escalated into violence.

According to the tenant, the confrontation started when his landlord questioned him about tiling work he had carried out in the apartment using his personal funds to improve the property for his business.

He claimed that the landlord demanded additional payment for the renovation before raising his annual rent from ₦300,000 to ₦1 million.

Narrating how the disagreement turned physical, the tenant alleged that the landlord slapped him first, prompting him to retaliate by striking the landlord on the head.

“He slapped me first and out of my defence, I smashed his head. It wasn’t intentional,” he said.

The confrontation reportedly left the landlord with serious head injuries.

However, details about the landlord’s current condition, the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and whether the police have commenced an investigation were not immediately available.
