…as PDP NEC accuses APC of militarization of Democracy
The decision of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to zone the Party’s presidential ticket to the Southern Region of Nigeria, has left the fate of President Bola Tinubu and other aspirants in the All Progressives Congress (APC), hanging on a swing as 2027 election draws closer.
The decision of PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) to zone the Presidential ticket of the Party for 2027 General Election to the Southern Region of Nigeria was captured in a communique issued after the meeting of The National Executive Committee of the Party, held on Monday, 25th August, 2025, in Abuja.
Part of the communique read: “The National Executive Committee (NEC) of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its 102nd meeting today, Monday, 25th August, 2025 further deliberated on the state of the Party and resolved as follows: That having retained the position of the National Chairman in the Northern Region of the country, the Presidential Candidate of the Party for the 2027 General Election is hereby zoned to the Southern Region.”
According to the communique obtained by the Guide Newspaper, the PDP National Executive Committee also during the meeting ratified and confirmed the appointment of Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the Party, commending him for stabilizing the party.
“In recognition of the efforts of the National Working Committee (NWC) under the leadership of the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum in stabilizing the Party, NEC hereby ratifies and confirms the appointment of Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the Party with effect from today, Monday, 25th August, 2025 until the National Convention holding at Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital on 15th to 16th November, 2025.”
The Peoples Democratic Party, used the occasion to condemn the All Progressives Congress (APC) for resorting to State Capture through state-backed intimidation, manipulation, inducement, coercion and violence against Nigerians.
PDP cited instances of APC attempting to muzzle democracy by deploying excessive security agencies to polling units during three recent bye-election held in Kaduna, Taraba and Zamfara States.
” NEC particularly expressed dismay and condemned the militarization of the recent bye-elections especially in Kaduna and Taraba States as well as Zamfara State where excessive security agencies were deployed in the conduct of run-off election in only five Polling Units in Kaura Namoda South State Constituency.”
PDP NEC used the opportunity to reassure Nigerians of PDP’s commitment to Democracy and the defense of the interest and wellbeing of all citizen as the Party further reposition to regain power in 2027.
