Why Senator Abdul Ningi resigned as chairman Northern Senators Forum
The embattled member representing Bauchi Central in the National Assembly, Senator Abdul Ningi, has tendered his resignation as the Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.
This follows his suspension as a member of the the Senate.
The resignation letter dated 11th March, 2024, cited “unfolding events in the National Assembly, the North and the Nation at large”.
“I will like to resign my position as the chairman of the Northern Senators Forum. This is of course necessitated by unfolding events in the National Assembly, the North and the Nation at large.
“I will like to specially thank members of the forum for the opportunity given to me for the last eight months to spearhead this very important forum.
“I believe this forum is very important to the progress and development of Northern Nigeria,” the letter reads.
On Monday, Senator Abdul Nigi posited that he was ready to face any consequence, even if it means suspension from the Red Chamber.
Senator Abdul Ningi was suspended by the Senate over his comment that the 2024 budget was padded with a N3.7 trillion additional funds.
In in interview with BBC, Senator Abdul Ningi had claimed that the National Assembly added a whooping N3.7 trillion to the initial proposed budget without linking it to any stated project in the budget.
But in a swift reaction to the allegation, the Senate on Tuesday moved a resolution suspending the federal lawmaker for three months.
The Senate maintained that there is no evidence proving that the 2024 budget was padded as Senator Abdul Ningi alleged.
