The Federal Government has confirmed that recent air strikes carried out in parts of North West Nigeria were conducted through an ongoing security partnership with the United States, aimed at dismantling terrorist camps linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria continues to work closely with international partners to combat terrorism and violent extremism, stressing that the collaboration is structured, lawful and respectful of the country’s sovereignty.

According to the government, the latest operation followed intelligence driven coordination which resulted in precision strikes on identified terrorist locations in the North West. The ministry explained that such cooperation includes intelligence sharing, strategic planning and other forms of support designed to weaken extremist networks and enhance national security.

The statement further noted that all counterterrorism actions prioritise the protection of civilians and uphold Nigeria’s commitment to unity, human rights and the dignity of all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity. It added that attacks by terrorist groups against any community are unacceptable and contrary to the nation’s values.

The confirmation followed reports of United States air strikes ordered on Christmas night, targeting ISIS affiliated militants operating in the region. The Federal Government said the action was part of broader efforts to disrupt terrorist operations and prevent further violence.

The ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to continue working with its partners to degrade terrorist capabilities, disrupt their funding and logistics, and address cross border security threats. It also disclosed that additional support, including enhanced surveillance and security assistance for northern states, is expected as part of the ongoing cooperation.

Nigeria, the statement concluded, remains committed to a comprehensive approach to counterterrorism that combines military action with intelligence, regional cooperation and long term measures to restore peace and stability.
