Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a 67-year-old Nigerian-British grandmother, Mrs. Mary Yetunde Barek, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 13 kilograms of co/caine through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Barek, a UK-based caregiver, was reportedly intercepted at the departure hall of Terminal 2 on Sunday, June 28, 2026, while preparing to board a Virgin Atlantic flight to London.
According to the NDLEA, a detailed search of her luggage led to the discovery of 31 large wraps of co/caine concealed in fake plantain peels and packed among other food items.
The agency said the substance, which was carefully disguised to look like hands of plantain, weighed 13 kilograms.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted ownership of the seized drug, according to the anti-narcotics agency.
