The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers and imposed various disciplinary sanctions on 31 others for misconduct, reaffirming its commitment to promoting discipline, professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
The decisions were reached during the Commission’s plenary meeting held at its Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement issued by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Mr. Torty Njoku Kalu.
According to the Commission, the four senior officers were dismissed after being found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts considered unbecoming of public officers.
The PSC also approved a series of disciplinary measures affecting other officers. Ten senior officers were reduced in rank, including three Superintendents of Police demoted to Deputy Superintendents of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police reduced to Assistant Superintendents of Police, and five Assistant Superintendents of Police demoted to the rank of Inspector.
In addition, two officers were compulsorily retired in the public interest.
The Commission further issued severe reprimands to 10 officers, reprimands to five others, warning letters to three officers and a letter of advice to one officer. It also exonerated seven officers after finding them not guilty of the allegations against them.
Chairman of the Commission, Hashimu Salihu Argungu, reiterated the Board’s zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
Argungu said the current PSC Board would not tolerate any form of misconduct by police officers and would continue to ensure that acts of indiscipline attract appropriate disciplinary measures.
He added that while the Commission would firmly punish misconduct, it would also continue to recognise, encourage and reward diligent and deserving officers through its established reward system.
