Amnesty International has condemned an alleged threat by the Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, to evict residents who refuse to support or vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The human rights organisation described the alleged statement as a direct threat to residents and an attack on their freedom of association and liberty.
In a statement, Amnesty International said no public official had the right to make a person’s continued residence in a particular part of Nigeria conditional on support for a political party.
The organisation called on the police and other security agencies to intervene and prevent any attempt to use violence or intimidation against residents because of their political choices.
It also urged security agencies not to ignore the alleged threat, but to investigate the matter and ensure that the Kuje Area Council chairman is held accountable if found to have made the statements attributed to him.
“Authoritatively saying that those who will not vote APC must leave Kuje Area Council is a direct threat to lives and an attack on freedom of association and liberty of persons,” Amnesty International said.
The organisation described the alleged threat as reckless and irresponsible, warning against the use of violence or intimidation to influence residents’ political choices.
Amnesty International further called on the government to ensure that human rights are respected, protected and fulfilled before, during and after elections.
It said this obligation was guaranteed under international human rights law and standards, as well as Nigeria’s Constitution.
The organisation stressed that citizens should be free to make their political choices without threats, coercion or fear of losing their right to live in their communities.
It urged the relevant authorities to take the allegations seriously and ensure that residents of Kuje Area Council are protected from any form of political intimidation or violence.
