The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has instituted a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asking the Federal High Court to compel the commission to investigate allegations that governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) diverted about ₦800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations to finance political and campaign activities.
In a statement issued by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said reports alleged that APC governors had been making monthly deductions from their FAAC allocations into a special fund reportedly established to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2026 and filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeks an order directing INEC to investigate the allegations and determine whether any provisions of Nigeria’s electoral laws were violated.
SERAP is also requesting that the court compel INEC to obtain full disclosure from the APC and the affected governors on any contributions made to campaign-related funds, including the identities of donors and the sources of the money.
The organisation argued that such alleged practices could undermine fair political competition and deny Nigerians a level playing field in choosing their leaders.
SERAP further accused INEC of failing to proactively enforce constitutional and electoral safeguards aimed at preventing abuses in political financing, warning that continued inaction could weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to the organisation, no individual or political party should be allowed to exceed legally prescribed contribution limits, whether directly or indirectly, and there must be full transparency regarding the origin and scale of political funding.
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.
