…Party says whereabouts of its 2027 presidential candidate remain unknown, calls for urgent security intervention
The African Action Congress (AAC) has raised the alarm over an alleged attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his campaign team in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, claiming that the activist’s whereabouts remain unknown following the incident.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred at about 1pm on Friday, October 30, while Sowore and his team were in the state for political engagements.
In a statement signed by Abdulkareem Musa, spokesperson for the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign, the party described the development as a serious security concern and called on relevant authorities to establish what happened and ensure the candidate’s safety.
The campaign urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security agencies to investigate the incident without delay.
“We demand an immediate security assessment, appropriate protective measures and a thorough investigation into the incident. The authorities must not wait for a tragedy before taking preventive action,” the statement said.
The campaign also condemned political violence and intimidation, insisting that electoral competition should not involve attacks on political actors or citizens exercising their democratic rights.
In a separate message published on Sowore’s official X account, the campaign alleged that armed thugs had abducted him, adding that his location was unknown.
“Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!” the post read.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported attack and alleged abduction had not been independently established as of the time of filing this report. The identities of the alleged attackers were also not disclosed.
The development comes as political parties intensify activities ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sowore, who is also a journalist and human rights activist, was in Ekiti for campaign engagements on Thursday.
The campaign has called on security agencies to act swiftly, while further details about the incident and Sowore’s whereabouts remain unclear.
