The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has organised a symposium on effective crime and court reporting, with legal practitioners and media professionals highlighting the need for accuracy, fairness and responsible journalism in the administration of justice.
The symposium, themed “Effective Crime & Court Reporting: The Role of the Media in the Administration of Justice,” focused on strengthening journalists’ understanding of legal processes and the responsibilities involved in reporting criminal and court-related matters.
A major session at the event, delivered by Hon. Justice Ifiok Ukana (rtd.), examined “Writing Effective Court Report and How to Navigate the Complexities of Contempt and Defamation.”
The session addressed some of the legal challenges journalists may encounter while covering judicial proceedings, particularly the need to understand the boundaries of contempt and defamation when reporting court matters.
Another presentation, delivered by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), F.J. Itim, Esq., focused on courtroom etiquette, judicial communication, understanding legal decisions and how to avoid misrepresentation.
The presentation emphasised the importance of journalists having a proper understanding of court proceedings and judicial decisions before publishing reports, particularly where inaccurate interpretation could mislead the public.
Also speaking at the symposium, Mr. Cletus Ukpong of Premium Times, addressed the need to balance the pressure to break news with the responsibility to produce factual and fair reports.
His presentation also examined the importance of protecting victims, witnesses and vulnerable persons while reporting crime and judicial proceedings.
The symposium underscored the significant role of the media in the justice system, particularly in keeping the public informed about court proceedings and legal developments.
The discussions further highlighted the need for journalists to combine speed with accuracy and fairness, while ensuring that reports do not misrepresent judicial decisions or prejudice individuals involved in ongoing cases.
The event provided journalists with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of court reporting and the ethical and legal considerations surrounding the coverage of crime and judicial proceedings.
The organisers and resource persons stressed that effective court reporting requires more than the ability to write compelling stories, but also a sound understanding of legal procedures, responsible use of language and adherence to professional and ethical standards.
