Amnesty International has condemned Senator Francis Fadahunsi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Osun East Senatorial District, over remarks allegedly made during a campaign in which he appeared to instruct supporters to kill members of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
The organisation described the senator’s alleged remarks as reckless and deliberate, warning that they could incite violence and undermine the peaceful conduct of the election.
Amnesty International said statements advocating violence, whether made publicly, online or through other platforms, must be urgently denounced by the authorities.
It stressed that Nigerian authorities have an obligation to prohibit advocacy of hatred that amounts to incitement to hostility, discrimination or violence.
The organisation therefore called for immediate action against any political statements capable of triggering violence during the electoral process.
Amnesty International also demanded that Senator Fadahunsi be held accountable over the alleged remarks.
