The Girls Culture Development Foundation (GCDF) has empowered more than 150 girls living with disabilities through its ‘She’s Limitless’ initiative held at the Ministry of Education Special Education Centre in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The programme, held on Friday, September 25, 2026, focused on equipping the girls with knowledge and confidence to recognise their abilities, explore opportunities and overcome societal limitations associated with disability.
Four resource persons facilitated sessions on emotional intelligence, self-esteem, self-discovery, career aspirations, leadership, advocacy and menstrual hygiene.
The engagement also provided an inclusive platform for the participants to express themselves, identify their strengths and discuss their aspirations. Their interests ranged from painting, tailoring, hairdressing, shoemaking and music to pursuing careers in law.
As part of the initiative, all participating students received sanitary pads and notebooks, while GCDF donated a fully stocked Pad Bank containing more than 250 sanitary pads to the school clinic to provide continued menstrual hygiene support during school hours.
Practical demonstrations on the proper use of sanitary materials were also conducted, with emphasis on menstrual health, personal hygiene and dignity.
The programme, however, exposed some challenges affecting the girls, including low self-esteem linked to negative family attitudes, inadequate vocational training equipment and poor road accessibility to the school.
GCDF said the findings had reinforced its commitment to sustained advocacy, family sensitisation, skills development and partnerships aimed at creating meaningful opportunities for girls living with disabilities.
The foundation said the initiative was built on the belief that every girl deserves to be seen, heard, valued and empowered, stressing that disability should not determine a girl’s future or limit her potential.
