Nigeria has recorded 263 deaths from Lassa fever in 2026, with 1,115 confirmed cases reported across 24 states and 119 local government areas, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

The latest figures, covering epidemiological weeks 1 to 38, were reported as the country continues to battle the viral disease, which is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents.

The NCDC identified late presentation of patients at health facilities as one of the factors contributing to the high case fatality rate, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and prompt medical attention.

In epidemiological week 38, the country recorded 120 suspected cases, 11 confirmed cases and four confirmed deaths. This followed week 37, when 158 suspected cases and 17 confirmed cases were reported, with no new confirmed deaths.

The NCDC has continued to urge Nigerians to maintain clean surroundings, store food in tightly covered, rodent-proof containers and dispose of waste properly to reduce exposure to rodents.

Members of the public have also been advised to seek medical attention promptly if they experience symptoms such as fever, weakness, headache or bleeding, rather than delaying treatment.

The latest figures underscore the need for sustained public awareness, early detection and effective prevention measures to limit further infections and deaths.
