The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 63-year-old man suspected to be involved in illicit drug trafficking following an intelligence-led operation in Akwa Ibom State.

The suspect, identified as Asuquo Etim, was apprehended by operatives of the Command on Wednesday during a stop-and-search operation after intelligence reports indicated that illicit substances were being transported from Atabong Park to Esit Eket.

Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed that the suspect, a native of Etebi Village in Esit Eket Local Government Area, was intercepted at about 9:30am.

According to the Command, a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of two large bags containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

Preliminary investigations further revealed that the exhibits were allegedly handed over to the suspect by a serving soldier for onward delivery and sale at Ibaka in Mbo Local Government Area.

The Police said investigations have commenced to uncover the network behind the alleged drug supply chain and arrest other accomplices linked to the operation.

Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and warned individuals involved in drug trafficking and related crimes to desist or face prosecution.

The Command also urged residents to continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing operations against criminal activities across the state.
